Ivan Turgenev Virgin Soil

With the publication of «A Sportsman's Sketches» in 1852 Ivan Turgenev established himself one of the leaders in the movement of Russian literary realism. Abandoning the idealized vision of Romantic literature, Realism seeks to present the true struggles of the human existence. In «Virgin Soil», his final novel, we see a continuation of the themes present throughout his other works. At the heart of the novel is the story of a young man and woman who are torn between love and politics. The novel is set against the populist underground revolutionary movement in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, a movement that seeks to awake the sleeping masses and take back the country from the ruling classes. With its beautiful descriptions of the provincial Russian countryside and a humorously depicted cast of characters, «Virgin Soil» stands as one of Turgenev's most ambitious efforts to do justice to the problems of contemporary Russian society.

Иван Тургенев First love

First Love is a novella by Ivan Turgenev, first published in 1860. It is one of his most popular pieces of short fiction. It tells the love story between a 21-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy. First Love was published in March 1860 in the Reader's Library. Like many of Turgenev's works, this one is highly autobiographical. Indeed, the author claimed it was the most autobiographical of all his works. Here Turgenev is retelling an incident from his own life, his infatuation with a young neighbor in the country, Catherine Shakovskoy (the Zinaida of the novella), an infatuation that lasted until his discovery that Catherine was in fact his own father's mistress. Critics were divided. Some criticized its light subject matter that did not touch upon any of the pressing social and political issues of the day. Others condemned the impropriety of that subject matter, namely a father and son in love with the same woman and a young woman who was the mistress of a married man. But it had its many admirers, including the French novelist Gustave Flaubert, who gushed in a letter to Turgenev, «What an exciting girl that Zinochka [Zinaida] is!» The Countess Lambert, a close acquaintance of Turgenev, told the author that the Russian emperor himself had read the novella to the empress and been delighted by it. Among the most significant works Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev: Rudin, Home of the Gentry, On the Eve, Fathers and Sons, Smoke, Torrents of Spring, Virgin Soil and many more.

Ivan Turgenev's «Fathers and Sons» is considered to be one of the author's greatest literary achievements. It is novel about the clash of ideologies of two generations. The older generation, or the fathers, represents an aristocracy whose power and influence is fading and giving way to the younger generation, or the sons, who represent to middle class nihilistic ideology. «Fathers and Sons» is a brilliant work that captures the tension that existed among generations and class in the pre-revolutionary era in Russia.

Turgenev I. Virgin Soil

Turgenev's final novel, Virgin Soil traces the destinies of several middle-class revolutionaries who seek to go to the people by working on the land and instilling democratic ideas in the countryside's locals. They include the daydreaming impoverished young tutor Nezhdanov - employed by the liberal councillor Sipyagin and his vain and beautiful wife Valentina - the naive young radical Maryanna and the progressive factory manager Solomin. Their liaisons, intrigues and conspiracies, set against the backdrop of Tsarist Russia, form the matter of Turgenev's most ambitious and elaborate work, which cemented the author's place in the West as Russia's foremost novelist while at the same time proving controversial at home.

Ivan Turgenev The Torrents of Spring, First Love, and Mumu

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a novelist, poet and playwright known for his honest and affectionate portrayals of Russian serfs in the feudal system of the nineteenth century. Unlike his contemporaries Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy, whose writings focused primarily on church and religion, Turgenev believed in and advocated the need for Russia to Westernize. He criticized the provincial society and political turbulence of his time through sophisticated, focused and often emotional prose. This edition contains «The Torrents of Spring,» an intimate novella that illustrates Turgenev's idealistic ideas about love, and that possibly reflects his own failure in finding romantic love. Also included in this edition, «First Love» is one of Turgenev's most beloved and well-known short works of fiction: a tragic, thought-provoking tale of unrequited love in the social hierarchy. Lastly, «Mumu» is a penetrating look at a feudalist government through the lives of a lonely, old woman lord and her serfs.
